Service Description

To join this level, these advanced swimmers must be able to: front crawl and back crawl for 100 metres each, breaststroke for 50 metres, scissor kick and eggbeater kick for 15 metres each, and underwater swim 10 metres to pick up an object. In Rookie Patrol: Swimmers will enhance their capability in the water, including stride entry, underwater forward and backward somersaults, lifesaving eggbeater kick and increased fitness levels to meet a 100 m timed swim. Rescue skills involve an increased skill level in ABC first aid basics, victim recognition and non-contact rescues. In Ranger Patrol: Swimmers will further develop their front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 75 m each, a 100 m Lifesaving medley and timed 200 m swims. First aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock and obstructed airway procedures. Star Patrol: Participants develop lifesaving and first aid skills; further refine front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 100 m each; and complete 600 m workouts and a 300 m timed swim. Lifesaving skills include defence methods, victim removals and rolling over and supporting a victim face up in shallow water. An excellent preparation for the Bronze Star award. The Lifesaving Society Bronze Medal Awards provide a fun and challenging progression of lifesaving training. Bronze Star is ideal for those swimmers who have passed the Swim Patrol levels and are looking to further their swimming and lifesaving skills but are too young to register in Bronze Medallion (ie age 11-12). Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion and provides a fun introduction to lifesaving sport. In Bronze Star: Candidates will learn about the Lifesaving Society’s training program opportunities, entries for various environments, develop victim recognition of a weak and non-swimmer and demonstrate single-rescuer drowning resuscitation (CPR) on a manikin. They will demonstrate sculling both in place and moving, throwing and reaching rescues, self-rescues in clothing from ice, swamped or capsized boat and preform a huddle with others. Candidates will continue to develop their swimming proficiency with 25 m swims of each: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, head-up front crawl, head-up breaststroke, whip kick, eggbeater and scissor kick, and complete a 400 m fitness challenge, 50 m obstacle swim and 50 m rescue drill. Upon passing Bronze Star: Candidates will receive a certification directly from the Life
