Swimmers should have previously passed Swimmer 5 (Red Cross SK 8) or equivalent ability: can front crawl and back crawl for 50 metres each, breaststroke 25 metres, tread water for 2 minutes, and complete the Swim to Survive Standard: roll into deep water, tread for 1.5 minutes and then swim 75 metres. These swimmers will master stride entries, eggbeater kicks, and legs-only surface support. They'll refine their front and back crawl over 100 m swims of each, and breaststroke over 50 m. Then they'll pick up the pace in 25 m sprints and interval training bouts of 4 x 25 m breaststroke. They'll easily swim the 300 m workout. Upon passing this level: swimmers will be able to front crawl and back crawl for 100 metres each, breaststroke for 50 metres, scissor kick and eggbeater kick for 15 metres each, and underwater swim 10 metres to pick up an object.
