Registration fees: $242 (Regional Parks, Radisson) $256 (Candle Lake) 22+ hour course _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ REQUIRED PREREQUISITE: Bronze Medallion certification (need not be current, but must be submitted via email prior to the start date). This course begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs. In Bronze Cross: Candidates will learn about the Lifesaving Society (Canada’s lifeguarding experts), non-fatal drowning, shallow water blackout, the roles and responsibilities of an assistant lifeguard, and safety supervision scanning. Candidates will continue to develop their fitness through 10 m underwater swims, a timed object recovery (10lb.), timed rescue drill and a 400 m timed swim (11 min max). This course has a strong team-focus; students must demonstrate effective communication, two-rescuer removals, two-rescuer drowning resuscitation (CPR), team searches, and spinal injury management. Throughout this course, candidates will be instructed in three team-rescue situations: multiple victims, submerged victim and assistant lifeguard situations. The course will conclude with a situational exam which is solely based on these three rescues. This is a pass/fail course: If a candidate fails this course, they will be required to retake the entire Bronze Cross course before they can move on to the Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor or National Lifeguard. Upon passing Bronze Cross: Candidates will receive a certification directly from the Lifesaving Society.
